The Merritt J. & Sarah Maynard House, built circa 1912, anchors a thoughtful infill project in Historic East Durham centered on West 4th’s Preservation + Density approach.

Rather than remove the existing home, West 4th preserved a residence connected to five generations of local history while using Durham’s reduced lot and small-lot home standards to introduce additional housing on the oversized corner property. Together with the adjacent homes on Taylor Street and Cherry Grove Street, the project demonstrates how historic preservation and responsible residential density can work together to support Durham’s evolving housing needs.
